There are several methods for cutting tiles by hand without a tile cutter using a cutting tool such as a glass cutter or a carbide tipped pencil.
Cut out tile from floor.
If you just have to cut a few tiles a glass cutter will suffice.
Mark a line across the tile at that distance.
If you need to cut more tiles however a tiling tool or a wet saw might be more convenient.
Cut out the shape with a rotary tool using a cutting bit with a guide.
Drive the cutting bit into the surface of the tile away from the mark and slowly move the tool along the marked lines.
Subtract 1 4 inch to allow for a spacer to determine the exact size to cut the tile.
Use a straight edge to mark the line with an erasable marker.
This can be attempted by a do it yourselfer although the results aren t guaranteed.
While loose tiles are cut using a tile wet saw installed tiles need to be cut with hand tools.
Ceramic tile is a beautiful durable surface that can last for a very long time.
Before using any tool to cut tile measure the glazed side of the tile to determine where you need to make the cut.
To make square or box cuts in the tile or to cut out large sections of tile use an angle grinder.
Over time it may become necessary to remove a portion of tile that is already installed while preserving the remaining tile.
Set the guide to the thickness of the tile.
